3D Printed Auxetic Furniture Structure

Taking 2.8 days of print time and 2.8kg of 99% recycled PLA to produce. This customisable furniture structure is fully 3D printed with the feature to add a tailored top to make it a stool or table. Designed to fit onto most commercially available 3D printers, it fits within a small print boundary of 250mm3. Once off the build plate it expands into the larger shape using a system of print in place hinges that then lock under tension of a clip. This project aims to push the boundaries of manufacturing using smaller 3D printers, with the idea of producing this stool/table anywhere at anytime, on any 3D printer.

2.8 Days of Printing

The 2.8 project celebrates slow design thinking within an ever-increasing fast paced world. The project embodies the principles of slow design and tailors them towards the 3D printing process. Relating these principles to a method of production such as 3D printing will help challenge how we make with these machines and ultimately create more meaningful and unique objects. The 2.8 furniture structure taking a minimum of 2.8 days to produce, was embraced and by understanding the constraint of producing one helped guide my iterations and decisions with designing. By accepting the length of time to produce large scale objects on small scale printers it will result in more meaningful objects created through this process. Plus, finding new ways of producing large, designed pieces on ‘ordinary’ printers helps promote the idea of democratized making, breaking any restrictions of creativity that was limited to expensive industry standard machines.
